UK Prime Minister resigns: Liz Truss, the recently-elected PM of the UK, announced her resignation on Thursday after just six weeks (45 days) in office. She will become the shortest-tenured PM in the country’s history. Shortly after entering office, Truss announced broad tax cuts in an attempt to give businesses and individuals relief from inflation. The proposed policies triggered turmoil in financial markets, including a sell-off in the bond market that led many pension funds to liquidate large quantities of assets, along with a decline in the value of the pound. Support within the Truss’ Conservative Party quickly evaporated.
