Southern border crossings rise: The southern border saw a large increase in the number of migrant crossings in May. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), more than 239,416 migrants attempted to cross into the U.S. and the number of unaccompanied minors saw a 20% increase from April of 2022. In a statement, CBP Commissioner, Chris Magnus said, "Our message to those who would try and gain illegal entry to the United States remains the same – don't make the dangerous journey only to be sent back.”

Ukraine war: According to the UN, around 12,000 civilians are trapped in the Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk. Severodonetsk (pop: 106,000) has been a high-priority target for Russia in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine.
