College attendance continues to decline, with enrollment down 4.1% in the Spring 2022 semester, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. Higher education institutions have now experienced 5 consecutive semesters of falling enrollment, dropping from 17.1M students at the beginning of the pandemic to 15.9M today. The largest declines have come at public 2-year community colleges, followed by public 4-year, then private 4-year nonprofit schools.
New home sales plummet: The sale of new homes fell 16.6% in April compared to March, the biggest monthly drop since 2013. A shortage of homes on the market, combined with record demand from buyers have pushed prices to all-time highs. The average price for a new home in April was $570,300, up 31% from $434,800 a year ago. In addition, the 30-year mortgage rate is over 5% now, up from under 3% a year ago, making monthly payments considerably more expensive.
