Job openings in the U.S. remained near a record high in December 2021, at roughly 11M. Over the past two decades, job openings have ranged between 3M and 7M (chart). On top of record employment openings, the rate at which people are quitting jobs (quit rate), was 2.9% in December, down slightly from November’s 3.0%, but still at record levels. For perspective, over the last twenty years the quit rate has ranged from 1.2% to 2.4% (chart).
Islamic State leader killed: The leader of the Islamic State, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, blew himself up along with members of his family amid a raid by U.S. secret forces of his hideout in Syria on Thursday. President Biden lauded the news, saying, “thanks to the bravery of our troops this horrible terrorist leader is no more.” Thirteen civilians were killed during the raid, including four women and six children.…
