Britney Spears appeared in court this week speaking out against the conservatorship she was placed under in 2008. The event sparked the viral hashtag #FreeBritney online. In a 20-minute speech, the pop star said, “he [Britney’s father] loved the control to hurt his own daughter 100,000%...I just want my life back." Spears said she was forced to perform tours without having a say and was told she couldn’t marry her boyfriend or have another child because the conservatorship denied the request.

Context: Her father, Jamie Spears, currently has control over her estate and personal decisions. A conservatorship is a court order that puts the financial and overall well-being of an adult who is deemed incapable of managing her life, into the hands of an individual or organization. It’s most often applied to celebrities who have mass influence and resources to manage.
