Juneteenth becomes U.S. national holiday: June 19th is the newest U.S. federal holiday, following President Biden’s signing of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on Thursday. The act was passed unanimously in the Senate and by a 415-14 majority in the House. Juneteenth is a commemoration of June 19th, 1865, when General Grainger of the Union Army enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, helping free the last slaves. It came about two months after the conclusion of the Civil War.

Hong Kong crackdown: The crackdown on freedom of speech is continuing in Hong Kong (HK), as five employees (including the editor-in-chief) from the pro-democracy newspaper, Apple Daily, were arrested on Thursday morning. Police arrested the individuals on suspicion of “collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security.” S…
