FBI orchestrates historic criminal sting: Over 800 criminals across 18 countries were arrested this week following a massive sting operation coordinated by the FBI and Australian government. “Operation Trojan Shield” was conducted by distributing some 12,000 mobile devices through informants to “more than 300 criminal syndicates operating in more than 100 countries” around the world. Pre-installed on the devices was an encrypted messaging service called ANON. Unbeknownst to the users, the FBI was the operator of the private device network and had access to more than 27M messages (photos) exchanged between criminals, discussing drug trafficking and plans for violence.
More: The arrests were made within a 24-48 hour period concluding Tuesday, and included leaders of drug rings and mafias, and more than 8 tons of cocaine.
