Texas Governor signs heartbeat bill: Gov. Greg Abbot signed one of the strictest anti-abortion bills in the country on Wednesday. The “heartbeat bill” prohibits abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. During the signing, Abbot said, “Our creator endowed us with the right to life and yet millions of children lose their right to life every year because of abortion” (video). Opponents of the legislation say that six weeks may not be enough time for women to know they are pregnant. The bill will not be enforced by state officials, but rather gives private citizens, even if outside the state, the ability to sue providers who perform an abortion after six weeks.
