NASA flies drone on Mars in world first: Ingenuity, a small autonomous drone that was carried aboard the Perseverance rover when it landed on Mars in February, made a short, autonomous flight on Monday (video). It’s the first time a powered aircraft has flown on another planet. In the future, drones could play a key role in exploring remote areas of Mars. The flight was an engineering feat, as the air density on Mars is less than 1% of Earth’s, which makes liftoff extremely difficult. Read more about how the drone was built and operates.
